This magical book immediately causes readers to cast around for a good tree in which to construct their very own aerial hideaway.

A historical introduction takes in the inevitable Treetops and Queen Elizabeth via 18th century engravings and finishes up at the end of the book with futuristic bubbles. Fictional treehouses enter children's consciousness via Lord of the Rings, Peter Pan and Tarzan, all illustrated here.

Then comes a selection of real life treehouses - willow, fairytale, castle, ship's deck, tropical luxury and so forth. Finally, when the reader no longer needs convincing and is simply desperate to get on with the job come the practical instructions.

These start with a list of tools, then an introduction to tree species (don't choose buckeye, the leaves are poisonous and the wood is too weak, but what about plum or cherry?) and then off you go - platforms, walls, windows, doors, access, railings.

I want one! And with this book, who knows, I might even get one.

'The ideal companion to all school holidays…' Why, no gardening in term time? 'a one-stop inspiration shop', how to avoid 'mud and mayhem'. This is very FUN in capital letters - and I mean FUN FUN FUN - gardening. It reads like a children's TV programme. Capitals are generously USED throughout the text to emphasise IMPORTANT words, and this makes for very IRRITATING reading.

Having said all that, there are some FUN projects. While decorating pots and making mosaics is hardly ground-breaking, but still very appealing to kids, several of the projects are original and amusing, and would get even reluctant gardening kids out there digging. Which has to be a GOOD THING.
