Here's something not everyone knows. Camellia sinensis is the tea plant. Camellia japonica, reticulata and sasanqua, however, are beautiful flowering evergreen ornamental shrubs and trees.

Camellias can be grown in the garden or in pots. Originally from subtropical regions of China, Japan and neighbouring countries, they love warm wet summers and fairly cold dry winters, but are fairly hardy. They can survive -5°C in pots and -15 to -20°C in open ground.

And the best thing about camellias? Their wonderful fragrance, particularly camellia sasanqua - ask Marcel Proust!
